Chih-kan Tower

Introduction

The Chih-kan Tower is located at the intersection of Chihkan St. and Minzu Rd. It was established by the Dutch. The Hans called the Dutch Hongmao and thus, called Chih-kan Tower Hongmao Castle or Fanzai Tower. The Spanish tried to occupy Taiwan but failed in 1598. After the Dutch occupied Penghu and were later expelled by the Ming government in 1622 (the 2nd year of Tianqu in the Ming Dynasty), they turned to Dayuan and started a planned colonial governance in Taiwan. The Dutch first established Zeelandia to strengthen their domination and after the Guo Huai-Yi Incident in 1652 established Provintia in 1653. Because Provintia was built in Chihkan, the local people called it Chihkan City. After the defeat in Nanjing, Cheng-Gong Zheng planned to occupy Taiwan and use it as a base to fight against the Qing and restore Ming. In 1661 (the 15th year of Yongli in the Ming Dynasty), Cheng-Gong Zheng selected Chih-kan Tower, where the defense is relatively weak, as the first target and forced the Dutch to retreat from Taiwan on December 13, 1661. It took eight months to fight off the Dutch and terminate their 38-year colonization in Taiwan. General Lang Shi defeated Zheng's army and ended the rule of the Zheng dynasty in 1683 (the 22nd year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty).

After Taiwan was incorporated in the Qing Dynasty, Chih-kan Tower was still used for the storage of munitions. During the Zhu Yi-Gui Incident in 1721 (the 60th year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty), in which the surviving people of the Ming-Zheng era fought against Qing for the restoration of Ming, the army dismantled the cast-iron tablet, on which four Dutch words are cast, out of the front door of Chih-kan Tower and used the iron to make weapons. Chih-kan Tower was damaged for the first time in this incident and sustained damage continuously afterwards. In 1750 (the 15th year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty), Ding-Mei Lu, the chief magistrate of the county moved his office to the right side of Chih-kan Tower. He repaired and maintained the tower and opened it to the public regularly. The “Chihkan Sunset Light” has won fame as one of the eight famous landscapes in Tainan since then. The followers of Guanyin built a Dashi Temple on the tower in the first year of Tongzhi. When the Qing-French War broke out, Ming-Chuan Liu ordered Shou-Qian Shen, the Taiwan Prefect at the time, to dismantle the tower built during the Dutch colonial era. The Dashi Temple was affected, too. In 1886 (the 12th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty), Shou-Qian Shen built the Penghu School to the north of Chih-kan Tower to improve local culture and education. He also filled the base of Chih-kan Tower and leveled it. He then built the Wenchang Attic, Wuzi Shrine and Haishen Temple on the platform.
