TITLE | From Bistability to Superluminality in Photonic Bandgap Structures |
ABSTRACT | Periodic structures play a rather fundamental role in optics, with applications ranging from fiber Bragg gratings to distributed feedback lasers. In this talk we review our work on linear and nonlinear propagation in these structures. In linear propagation we encounter phenomena such as apparent superluminal tunneling and a delay time that saturates with the length of the structure. This paradoxical phenomenon is known as the “Hartman Effect” and is the subject of much controversy. We show how our work resolves this paradox. We also describe nonlinear phenomena such as optical bistability, gap solitons, and distributed-feedback Raman lasing that can occur in these structures. |
