TITLEDirect Dark Matter Detection and the Newest Results of the CDMS-II Experiment

ABSTRACTWeakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs)arising in several extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics are one of the leading candidates for Dark Matter. Currently, the most promising method to detect different WIMP candidates is the direct detection of the recoil energy deposited by elastic scattering of ambient WIMPs on the target nuclei. The aim of this talk is giving the audience an overall picture of direct Dark Matter detection experiments. I will briefly review the evidence and candidates for Dark Matter. Then I will give an overview of the direct detection and discuss the parameters on which the detection event rate depends. Some detection techniques and currently running and projected experiments will also be described. In particular, I will talk about the newest results of the CDMS-II experiment and the physical meaning and importance of their results.
