TITLEAtom interferometry and quantum walk

ABSTRACTIn atom interferometers, light pulses direct matter waves into different paths by atom-light interactions. The wave functions in different paths accumulate different phases which can be read out by measuring the population at the interferometer outputs. Unlike photons, atoms have mass, which makes atom interferometers suited to measure gravity, recoil frequency, Newton’s gravity constant G, and so on. On the other side, in quantum walk wave functions are also being separated through coin and translation operators. The quantum interference nature between different paths distinguishes this from classical random walk and empowers related applications in quantum algorithm. In this talk , the first part will be an introduction of atom interferometry and a related example as using such a precise instrument to make the state-of-the-art measurement of the fine structure constant. The second part will be an introduction of quantum walk and how people implemented it. Finally, I will appreciate the similarity between these two subjects and point out potential interplay between them, discuss the possibility of implementing a more efficient quantum walk through techniques in atom interferometry, or improving the measurements in atom interferometry by referring to the structure of operators in quantum walk.
