TITLEEpsilon-near-zero and ultralow-refractive-index metamaterials for broadband optical applications

ABSTRACTThis talk outlines recent progress in designing a special class of metamaterials possessing the permittivity close to zero (epsilon-near-zero) and/or ultralow refractive index (n<1) over a broad frequency range. The designed metamaterials are periodic metallodielectric nanostructures (subwavelength photonic crystals) with the unit cell of special geometry, where the content of metal and dielectric phases has to be determined soving an inverse homogenization problem. One-, two-, and three-dimensional geometries have been considered. Some limitations of the techniques used and possible applications of the designed metamaterials have been briefly considered.
