TITLENonlinearity and Modulation instability in Optics and Lasers

ABSTRACTNonlinearity is ubiquitous and serves as one of the manifestation to the nature interactions. It governs many of the nature phenomena from very tiny scale to large scale. Even in a homogeneous nonlinear system, there exists continuous wave (homogeneous) solution which exhibits an instability, namely modulation instability (MI). MI is a central nonlinear process that is associated with the exchange of energy between a periodic perturbation and a plane wave background, leading to spatial or temporal pattern formation and even to the freak waves in ocean and self-pulsation of laser system. Supported by experimental evidence, we show the formation and suppression of periodic optical pulse trains in a passive Q-switched laser system can be predicted by modulation instability.
